El Paujil is home to 394 bird species, 32 amphibian species, 46 reptile species, and 43 species of non-flying mammals. Additionally, this conservation sanctuary protects one of the most vulnerable ecosystems of the Magdalena Medio region—the tropical rainforest. Without a doubt, it is an incredible place to experience Colombia’s rich biodiversity.
Location
The ProAves Reserve El Paujil is located in the village of Puerto Pinzón, in the municipality of Puerto Boyacá, Boyacá.
HOW TO GET THERE?
Public transportation
Travel from Ibagué, Bogotá, or Medellín to Puerto Boyacá, Boyacá, using the transportation companies Brasilia, Rápido Tolima, Los Libertadores, or Transporte La Reina.
Once in Puerto Boyacá, head to the market street (one block from the main square) to find the dispatch area for the Transluzena company, which offers transport to Puerto Pinzón. Departure times: 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. The estimated travel time is 2 to 3 hours.
Private transportation
It is not necessary to reach the municipality of Puerto Boyacá. Instead, upon reaching the “Dos y Medio” junction, take the road towards Puerto Pinzón. About 15 minutes into this route, you will find an unpaved road on the left, marked with a sign indicating the Puerto Pinzón-Pozo 2 route.
Once in Puerto Pinzón, you have several options to reach the reserve:
- A 40-minute walk
- A motorcycle taxi ride
- A boat ride along the Ermitaño River (availability depends on the river’s water level during the rainy season)
Return trip
For the return, follow the same process. Transport from Puerto Pinzón to Puerto Boyacá departs at 6:30 a.m., 7:00 a.m., and 3:00 p.m. From Puerto Boyacá’s main square, you can find the appropriate route to your next destination.
The road conditions are generally difficult, so we recommend traveling in a 4×4 vehicle.
